For every season, there are some basic must-haves. During the summer, your favorites might be tank tops, flip flops, or denim capris, while the winter months call for other basic wardrobe builders. As someone known by friends and family for my ability to put an outfit together, I have provided several fashion trends/basics for the winter season that you just can’t be without.
1. Scarves
The scarf is my favorite new must-have of the season. And I’m not just talking about scarves to wear outside in the freezing cold along with your gloves and ear-muffs. Everyone is wearing a scarf this season to accessorize any outfit. I, in particular, love wearing a scarf when I am wearing all black. It breaks up the outfit with some color and keeps you warm at the same time. My first one was a black and beige one that I found at a local boutique, but I recently picked up two at Target – a blue one that fades to black and a black, gray, and white plaid one – and both cost under $20.
2. Hats
Not only do hats keep your head warm and toasty, they also serve as great fashion accessories (especially on bad hair days). I bought a basic, fitted black cap in New Orleans last spring that I wear all the time. For the winter months, you might opt for a beret or something knitted. Hats also add this city-girl, urban feel. Try one – you’ll see what I mean.
3. Boots
I am definitely a boots-kind-of-girl during the winter. Whether it’s a pair of skinny-heeled ankle boots, knee-high or over-the-knee boots, wedges, cowboy boots, or UGGS, boots are a must-have. Ankle boots look great with jeans, as well as wedges. Knee-high or over-the-knee boots are perfect with skirts, dresses, skinny jeans/pants, or with cuffed-jeans. With a pair of leggings or skinny pants/jeans, my boots of choice are cowboy boots, wedges, or ankle boots.
4. Leggings
On days that I want to look stylish or just want to be comfortable, I always reach for my leggings. You can never go wrong with basic black. Denim leggings are another option; they look just like jeans and work great with a cute pair of boots. If you’re daring, try a pair of snakeskin leggings. But beware: make sure you wear a longer sweater, cardigan, tunic, or sweater dress with leggings. Anything too short won’t look right. I recently saw a girl at the mall wearing denim leggings with a too-short shirt, and it wasn’t a flattering look for the size of her…well, backside.
5. Sweater Dresses
A basic sweater dress will get you through the winter and can be worn for many different occasions – from a night out on the town or dinner at a nice restaurant to the usual day at the office. I have a favorite striped sweater dress in gray by Juicy Couture that I wear over a black tank with leggings and tall boots, of course.
6. Layering
Not so much a must-have but rather a must-do: practically a day does not go by in winter where I am not layering more than one article of clothing. I almost always wear a basic, fitted, stretchy black or white tank under a sweater. Then I might add a longer hoodie or cardigan sweater. Add a scarf or maybe your favorite fleece jacket, and you’re all set.
So, what are you waiting for? Just because Christmas and Hanukkah are over, that doesn’t mean you can’t still treat yourself. Happy shopping!
