“I run the ball, I catch the ball, and for this team I am very valuable. I think any time a defense or any other team comes in here … one of the players that they have to stop when they come play the Philadelphia Eagles is Brian Westbrook.” -Brian Westbrook

PHILADELPHIA, USA— It’s a sad, sad day in the Philadelphia sports world, but one that we certainly had foreseen.

Believe it or not, it was just a couple of seasons ago when Brian Westbrook accounted for nearly 37 percent of the Eagles’ total offense in 2007, but for the past few years has been plagued by injuries and sitting on sidelines, virtually missing in action.

It was in '07 when B-West made up 37% of the Philadelphia Eagles Offense

In fact, he has not played a full 16-game NFL season. Standing at 5’10, the 2002 draftee from Villanova University is now 30-years old and some critics say he is far past his physical peak.

His ribs and triceps of the upper body have reportedly taken a beating throughout the years. Notable injuries to the knee joint and ankle also caused sidelining of the former Eagle.

Even so, nothing but good things out of those closest to him could be said–

“I think we all know that Brian is one of the all-time great Philadelphia Eagles,” coach Andy Reid said. “For what we’ve done here over the years, Brian has been just a huge part of building this program to the level that we’re at now. My heart will always be a Brian Westbrook fan as we go forward here.”

Now that Brian Westbrook was released from the Eagles roster on Tuesday, the positive is that the Philadelphia Eagles franchise saved $7.5-million on the former Eagle runningback.

Part of the 1,000-yard rushing club, and former All-Pro leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage in 2007 with 2,104.

Where even was Brian Westbrook in the 2009 season? He missed literally half the season due to injuries: a pair of them being concussions that had become a health safety issue throughout the league, and an ankle injury.

Brian did score two touchdowns, but not with the authority that he once had on the field.

So who are the Eagles giving the ball to from here? LeSean McCoy.

“That’s who’s going to take the ball from here,” Reid said.

Lesean McCoy who rushed for 637 yards with four touchdowns in 16 games as a rookie this past season, will become Philly’s No. 1 runningback…

As always, there is mixed reaction among fans, although the news didn’t startle some–

“I’m not too shocked. Peppers, LT, and Westbrook are all sitting on free agency,” said Buford Montgomery via Facebook, speaking about the other soon-to-be unrestricted free agents.
