PHILADELPHIA, USA-[onlyinphiladelphia.com]– The city’s budget shortfall could reach $100-million by June 2010, and City Hall is proposing a plan to tax sugar-sweetened drinks by one cent per ounce to combat the deficit.

“There’s a question of how we raise revenues; I think that would be a harmless way of doing it. We don’t want to raise property taxes, we don’t want to raise other taxes,” City Council President Anna Verna said to WPVI-TV.

This could also be combatting the obesity epidemic, as Michelle Obama is already taking a self-proclaimed lead-role in.

A penny-an ounce tax climb would bring a regular $1.50 Coke to $1.70 at most convenient stops.

Philadelphia would be among other cities like Chicago to step in on sugar-sweetened drinks like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sprite, and 7UP.

While most consumers are aware of the high amounts of sugar in soft drinks, what does it actually look like? Courtesy of  Imgur we can now show you what 40 grams of sugar in a Pepsi looks like side-by-side a Pepsi can.

How many cans do you drink a day?
