The ’82nd Academy Awards: A Historic Night for “The Hurt Locker”
(OiP)— The Academy Awards is where all the biggest movie stars and directors come together for one night to take part in a historic award show. The tradition of the awards has been going on for eighty two years now and continues to have huge ratings.
This year the awards were hosted by legend Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Both of these men have starred in dozens of comedies and started their career on Saturday Night Live. Martin is no stranger to the Academy Awards, since this will be the third show he has hosted.
The show was filled with surprises especially towards the end of the night when the Oscar for best actress was presented. Everybody thought that Gabourey Sidibe would win for her epic role in “Precious”. The star has been getting so much media attention because it was her first role ever and she delivered an iconic performance making her a star overnight. However, the curve ball was thrown when Sandra Bullock won for “The Blind Side”. Her husband Jesse James, the bad ass Orange County chopper guru, was very emotional for her award.
For all ’82 years of the awards there has never been a female Oscar for best director– this was all about to change tonight. “Hurt Locker’s” Kathryn Bigelow took home the award. She not only was the first ever woman to win, but her victory was even sweeter because she beat James Cameron for his directing of “Avatar”.
Well the best director role didn’t go to James Cameron, but who would of thought the best movie of the year would not be “Avatar”? The Academy Awards thought differently. Before Kathryn could even get back stage Tom Hanks announced that “The Hurt Locker” won best picture of the year. The cast and director celebrated in a shocked fashion, turning the ending of the show all about “The Hurt Locker.”
