After watching live soccer (futbol) games in Italy, Spain, Brazil, and here at home over the past several years, I am more excited for the upcoming World Cup than I have been before. The World Cup is truly the biggest sporting event in the world. For one month (June 11th to July 11th) billions of people will watch as 32 countries compete to become world champions.

During the competition countries bogged down in civil war have literally stopped fighting for weeks to cheer for their team on the grand stage. Soccer is the beautiful game. It can be played almost anywhere because unlike many other sports that require a great deal of equipment, soccer players need only a ball; it can be played in nations both rich and poor.

While soccer still isn’t as popular in the United States as it is in other parts of the world, a larger fan base has grown here due to the increasing popularity of MLS (Major League Soccer).

Philadelphia even added a team this season, The Philadelphia Union, and although they are off to a slow start (in terms of wins and losses) it is a great thing to have a team here in the Philly.

Before heading off to South Africa the U.S. team will play two final games at home. The first one will take place on Tuesday, May 25th in Hartford, CT against the Czech Republic. The second will be played four days later on May 29th (2 PM) right here in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field!

For those of you who already love soccer or for those that want to come see what all the hype is about, this is your chance to come cheer on the U.S. as we take on Turkey.

If you think you aren’t interested in soccer, I highly suggest you put your assumptions aside and give it chance live and in person. You might just be surprised.
