Facing elimination from the World Cup after England beat Slovenia (1-0), Landon Donovan scored one of the biggest goals in U.S. soccer history as the United States beat Algeria 1-0. The goal came in stoppage time (91st minute) to break a zero-zero tie. Once again an American goal (Clint Dempsey) was waived on in a questionable call by the officials earlier in the game.
This is the first time the U.S. has won their grouping (Group C) since the 1930′s and now moves on to play this Saturday at 2PM vs. the runner up from Group D (which will most likely be Ghana, Germany, or Serbia).
This is truly a great day for U.S. soccer and it is only fitting that the goal was scored by Landon Donovan who is the face of soccer in our country. Had he not scored the U.S. would have finished with three draws and missed the knock-out round. The U.S. goal-keeper Tim Howard again played a great game holding Alergia scoreless.
In any other country fans would be taking to the streets to celebrate! It’s time to get behind this team if you haven’t already!
USA! USA!
