Home Town Hero Saves Swimmer in Ocean City, NJ
OCEAN CITY, NJ — On Saturday afternoon 25 year old, Michael Hammand Jr of East Norriton, saved a swimmers life about 70 feet off the shore at about 12pm as he rode by on his jet ski with girlfriend Kim.
It all started when a Polish man had been enjoying his time in the water early Saturday afternoon, until he was pushed out by the current nearly 70 feet off the Ocean City Beach. He was able to stay afloat long enough for Mike to see him early Saturday afternoon from his passing jet ski. Mike was accompanied by his girlfriend, 22 year old Kimberly Termini who also had a helping hand in the recovery.
“I saw the man and I knew he was in trouble as he was fighting to keep his head above the water. My first instinct was to do what I could to help him get to land”, says Michael. “I jumped off my jet ski and had to get under him, putting myself completely under water. I knew I didn’t have much time as I noticed how fatigued the man was.”
Kim, who has her first responders license, knew that she better throw Michael a life jacket. “There was no sight of even 1 life guard, so it was time to to put my own experience to the test”, said Kim.
They were able to get the man onto the jet ski and to dry land, but just incredible courage in the rescue job by Michael and Kim!
As for the Polish man, they didn’t get to much reaction from him, since he didn’t know English, but they knew from the look on his reassuring face that he was very appreciative!
