CHESTER COUNTY, PA — A Halloween attraction set to open next month on the grounds of the former Pennhurst State School and Hospital. There has been a lot of controversy around this, due to the nature of it’s past. The institution was the site where thousands of disabled people were allegedly treated inhumane.
“Pennhurst Asylum” will begin Sept. 24, said property owner Richard Chakejian, who is collaborating with Randy Bates, owner of the Bates Motel & Haunted Hayride attraction in Glen Mills.
“We’re hoping the first year to do between 15,000 to 20,000 people over several weekends,” Bates said. “And I hope that number grows.”
Bates noted that 95 people are being hired to work at the attraction, and local hotels, stores, and other businesses will benefit.
What are your thoughts? Should the place where many suffered be turned into entertainment?
