The Republican candidate and retired Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman, was elected to Congress in New Jersey’s third district on Tuesday. He defeated John Adler in the race, which was a closely-watched battle that was on the national radar. Runyan’s victory played into the GOP wave that changed the leading party in the House.

During the election’s final days, Runyan was able to capitalize when Adler was reportedly involved in an attempt to plant another candidate on the ballot. It was suspected that Adler would have done so to siphon off votes from Runyan.

Runyan, 36, will join Byron “Whizzer” White and JC Watts, among others, as NFL players who held major public office. If his congressional career is anything like his NFL career, Runyan should do alright. During his 14-year NFL career, the offensive lineman was 7-2 when visiting D.C. to play the Redskins.

OIP wants to recognize Brian Rowan, U.S. Army 2nd Lt., for his contributions to Operation Enduring Freedom while serving in Afghanistan for the past 6 months. He is arriving home today, October 25th, 2010, for some much needed rest and relaxation with his friends and family for 2 weeks before heading back for another 6 months.

Rowan is a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and platoon leader of Support Platoon, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, Task Force Spartan, native of Langhorne, Pa, and West Point Class of ’09 Graduate.

One of his platoon’s primary roles is to train the Afghan National Police and Afghan National Army along with the continued efforts to partner, advise and assist in developing the government of Afghanistan through projects and daily interaction.

His unit oversees all issues within the Behsood District of Nangarhar Province. Along with daily missions to villages within the district, they also conduct overnight missions at the ANP station to increase security, train the ANP, and conduct combined patrols. These missions enable other brigade advisors in the areas of legal, engineering and governance, spending more than 18 hours per week at the district centers strictly on these matters alone.

Brian Rowan, platoon leader, interacts with the village maliks regularly. “Our platoon is very fortunate to be able to work with the people of the Behsood District. Everyone is very hospitable and friendly toward us when we visit the different villages.”

The progress in the most populated district in Nangarhar Province is a direct reflection of the hard work of Support Platoon Soldiers with the Government of Afghanistan leaders to ensure a better future for the people of this country.

Solar Cycle Begins, Philly Astronomer Captures Solar Edge

(OiP)— A local Philadelphia astronomer from Bucks County has submitted some of their latest pictures of the sun at the beginning of a solar pattern what is known by astronomers to be the 11 year solar cycle.

Commonly referred to as the "11-year cycle".

“The images are done with my telescope that filters only the wavelength of Hydrogen alpha so that prominences and filaments can be seen,” remarked the lifetime Philly astronomer, who chose to remain anonymous.

“The new solar cycle began in earnest last December.”

“It is now just the beginning so the sun is more active, and activity will increase over the next few years.”

Black History Month 2010 MLK Tribute

Here is a segment of the second half of Dr. King’s speech originally airing on CBS television 47 years ago.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.

But not only that:

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

Age of Airborne Lasers Upon Us (Video)

-[OnlyInPhiladelphia.com]- The Age of Airborne Lasers has truly become a reality for the United States military. The video contains a Liveleak.com video of a laser system mounted to the front of a modified 747 jet spotting and shooting down a ballistic missile in under 2 minutes!

“While ballistic missiles like the one [the Airborne Laser Tested] destroyed move at speeds of about 4,000 miles per hour, they are no match for a super-heated, high-energy laser beam racing towards it at 670 million mph,” says defense contractor Northrop Grumman in a release after announcing the successful test on Friday.

2010 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony Underway in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, CANADA-[OnlyInPhiladelphia.com]- More than 50,000 lucky ticketholders packed into the BC stadium in Vancouver, BC for the first two and a half hour Olympic opening or closing ceremony ever held indoors.

Music will feature some of Canada’s best-known musical stars — including Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan and k.d. lang.

The ceremony will come to a close with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron at BC Place in Vancouver, BC.

The show is currently being staged in front of International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, Canadian governor general Michaelle Jean and the chiefs of the Four Host First Nations.

Over 1oo different projectors are being utilized to create the snowy and dreamy effects within the stadium. The Vancouver Opening Ceremony costs between an estimated 30-40 million dollars. We have already seen incredible projector effects which seamlessly turn 2-D backgrounds into enlivened 3-D visuals.

The ceremony will include several elements in honor of 21-year old Georgian luger Nodar

Kumaritashvili, who died earlier today in Olympic training by smashing into a metal pole.

According to the Vancouver Sun, Kumaritashvili was traveling at speeds greater than 90 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

The Georgian delegation were all wearing black armbands, and it has been reported they may withdraw from the Olympics.
