PHILADELPHIA, PA [OnlyInPhiladelphia.com] – New York did it. Now, Philly is, too – that is, holding a contest to design the package of the city’s own condom.

New York City already had its own condom, so that contest was for participants to design a new package wrapper. However, Philadelphia has never had its own official condom before, so this contest is aimed at designing the winning limited-edition packaging. The winner will be awarded $250, with restrictions being that the work must be original, and the winner must reside in Philly.

Philadelphia typically distributes approximately 1.5 million condoms per year; among them, 60,000 are female condoms. The city hopes to increase this number, as New York City plans to distribute 41 million free condoms this year. NYC’s winning design was the image of the electronic power button.

In fact, Philadelphia’s rate of sexually transmitted diseases is currently one of the highest in the nation. Fortunately, there has been a decline in gonorrhea over the past ten years, but others are still on the rise, as reports for the first nine months of 2010 show an increase compared to the same time period just last year.

Although the contest and the campaign itself are not solely directed at teens and young adults, statistics do show increasing numbers of STDs affecting this population. This contest is just serving as one way to increase awareness and create change.

An $85,000 federal grant for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases is paying for the cost of the distribution of the actual condoms themselves. The promotion of the campaign, however, will come out of the city’s not-so-large budget.

With the new packaging design, the city hopes to expand the number distributed and make condoms available with various types of retail establishments, as well as, but not limited to, community organizations and health centers.

City officials in both New York and Philly said that reactions to the contest have been positive.

ABC's Bachelorrette

PHILADELPHIA — Last night on the Bachelorette Philadelphia based attorney, Craig Robinson received the third rose to advance to next week’s episode.  Although in last night’s episode he had just a few moments with Ali(some said somewhat dry), he did dis the weatherman from interrupting his one-on-one time.  Great job in keeping our Philly pride!

Craig is a Neshaminy High School native and grew up in Langhorne.  After attending Pennsylvania State and graduating in 2005 he had attended Vilanova Law.  Craig is currently a active attorney with Weinstein, Schleifer & Kupersmith, P.C..  He is also  a personal friend, and has supported some of our events in the past.

PHILADELPHIA, USA – [OnlyInPhiladelphia.com] – Going on a date and don’t know what to do? Whether it’s your first date or your 50th, here are some can’t miss things to do in Philly. (And, I must admit, I have experienced a number of these ideas myself!)

1. Dining in the “swingy chairs” at Continental Mid-Town
A visit to this popular Rittenhouse spot (located at 18th and Chestnut) is a great place to grab drinks, appetizers, dinner, or one of the many bite-sized desserts. And what better way to enjoy an evening out than while lounging in the “swingy chairs” – bamboo chairs that swing from the ceiling? The tables with the “swingy chairs” are definitely my favorite at Continental, but don’t be surprised if one of these tables is not readily available; they are a favorite among patrons, and the wait can occasionally be long on the weekends. 2. Taking a walk through Rittenhouse Square or Washington Square Parks
Walking through a park is a great after-dinner idea for a first date (of course, one that is going well, where both parties are not fleeing the scene once the check arrives) or for long-time couples. You can walk off dinner, talk, and enjoy the crisp fall, spring, or summer air. Rittenhouse Square (Walnut between 18th and 19th) is especially good for people watching, while Washington Square (6th and Walnut) is a bit quieter. However, both feature a number of benches and offer scenic views.

3. People watching while having drinks or dessert outside of Parc or Tria
After a walk in Rittenhouse Square Park, you may want to delight in a glass of wine along with a cheese plate or French pastry dessert. Parc (18th between Walnut and Locust) directly overlooks the square, has plenty of outdoor seating, and has an ambience that can’t be matched. Try one of the delicious desserts offered at this popular French bistro, or stop over to Tria (18th and Sansom) and get to know one another at this frequented wine and cheese bar. There are also plenty of beers available, as well as delicious salads and a variety of Bruschetta breads. Tria also offers another location at 12th and Spruce. 4. Miniature golfing in Franklin Square
Conveniently located at 6th and Race, this 18th hole course with a Philadelphia theme is perfect for any fall, spring, or summer date. Putt through famous Philadelphia landmarks, such as the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, Elfreth’s Alley, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. 5. Taking a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Located directly on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the art museum features distinct works of art of various genres, periods, and eras, and there is surely something for everyone here. Whether you are checking out one of the museum’s many exhibits throughout the year (the Salvador Dali and Cezanne and Beyond are two exhibits I have seen) or just exploring the museum in general, experiencing some culture is always a good idea. 6. Taking a carriage ride throughout Old City and Society Hill
This is something I have always wanted to do, but have yet to experience! This may not be the best idea for a first date, but would be perfect for an anniversary gift or any special occasion. Relax aboard a horse-drawn carriage through the streets of Society Hill and Independence National Historic Park and enjoy the ambience of historic Philadelphia. 7. Walking around South Street and Penn’s Landing
South Street certainly offers something for everyone. Whether you’re just browsing the funky boutiques or sipping cocktails, there is always something to do here. Jon’s Bar and Grill, the former residence of Larry from The Three Stooges located at 3rd and South, offers outdoor seating both upstairs and downstairs and is an inexpensive and popular spot. For some laughs, stop into Condom Kingdom or The Mood, unless your date is not what/whom you expected, in which case you may want to stay far from these places. Historic Penn’s landing is only steps away and offers scenic river views at night.

8. Enjoying a historic dinner at the City Tavern & having drinks in Old City
The City Tavern, a popular tourist spot located at 2nd and Walnut, will make you feel as if you stepped back into the 19th century; the staff is even dressed head-to-toe in period costumes. You’ll enjoy traditional food from the colonial days of historic Philadelphia, while being waited on by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Benjamin Franklin, among others. 9. Taking in an artsy flick at one of the Ritz Theatres
Catch a movie and munch on some popcorn at the Ritz East (2nd & Chestnut), the Ritz Five (Walnut between 2nd and 3rd), or the Ritz at the Bourse (4th between Chestnut and Market). Enjoy some first-rate, artsy films (you won’t find Harry Potter here, for example) at reasonable prices in a cozy atmosphere. 10. Enjoying a relaxing and scenic boat ride on the Spirit of Philadelphia
Enjoy lunch, dinner, or a unique night out aboard the famous Spirit of Philadelphia. Board the ship at 401 S. Columbus Boulevard, and your cruise awaits! You might even want to take in a show – Tony and Tina’s Wedding is performed here regularly – or travel aboard one of the late-night moonlight cruises. Below are two popular bowling alleys in the city – not only perfect for bowling but also to see and be seen.

• Lucky Strike, 1336 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107
Lucky Strike is perfect for a night out. With twenty-four lanes, bars on the second and third floors, six pool tables, optional bottle service, optional valet parking, and discounted parking available, Lucky Strike is a favorite of mine and other Philly locals (as well as in a variety of other cities around the country). It’s also one of those places so popular, a lot of suburbanites come here on a regular basis, too. • North Bowl, 909 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123
Although I have yet to visit North Bowl in Northern Liberties, I’ve heard this is also a great spot – and with today’s current economic climate – and less pricey than Lucky Strike. This 21,000 square foot facility, which opened in July 2006, is another fun date idea. Here, you’ll also find a full-bar, pool tables and pinball machines, along with a cool atmosphere – a retro décor and lounge complete with glass-enclosed pod overlooking the lanes. * Enjoying a delicious dessert for two at a dessert café
Three of my favorites are Max Brenner (the most recent addition), the Naked Chocolate Café (classic and classy), and Cosi (the casual choice).

Yes, Cosi’s is a very popular franchise, yet is always a perfect after-dinner spot. A large variety of teas, coffees, and hot chocolates are on-hand, and I can never seem to make up my mind! However, the major draw here is the s’mores, perfect for sharing (for either two or four people). Choose from either the traditional s’mores with graham crackers, Hershey’s chocolate, and marshmallows, or choose the s’moreos, complete with Oreo cookies instead of graham crackers. Although I listed Max Brenner under dessert cafes, it is really so much more. A brand new location opened recently in Philadelphia, adding to the already established locations in Israel and New York City, among others. Just choose your chocolate passion; it’s all here waiting for you, from chocolate desserts, to chocolate fondues, to chocolate drinks, and other chocolate specialties – even chocolate pizza! Max Brenner offers more than just chocolate, however. The full menu also features a variety of salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and other options. If you’re a chocolate lover, this is another place not to be missed! This casual yet elegant dessert café features everything chocolate. From a box of chocolates, to chocolates in a variety of shapes and sizes, to chocolate dessert, to hot chocolate, or a simple cup of coffee, this place has it all. There are several varieties of hot chocolates available, from a traditional, thinner American hot chocolate to a thicker European hot chocolate perfect for dipping. Frozen chocolate drinks are also available. Some items can be a bit pricey, but the Naked Chocolate Café is definitely worth it to fulfill any chocolate lover’s ultimate fantasy! These next few places just have this romantic and unique aura that you’re sure to enjoy, and each brings something different to the table.

• Chifa, 707 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106
Although I could have listed just about any other restaurant in the city, I chose Chifa for its relative newness, unique atmosphere, and excellent appetizers. It’s just way different from other places you’ll find around here. Chifa is the newest restaurant opened by Latin restaurateur Chef Jose Garces, modeled after the Cantonese and Peruvian tastes found in Peru. Upstairs, you’ll find a number of tables in a Latin/Asian décor. Walk to the back of the restaurant, and you’ll find my favorite tables – private booths with pillows and beads hanging down from the ceiling. Appetizers, tapas, and entrees focus on seafood, chicken, beef, and vegetarian specialties. Head downstairs for a more red and black Asian-themed décor. • Positano Coast by Lamberti, 212 Walnut Street, Philadelphia PA 19106
Slip away to the Italian Riviera when you and your date visit Positano Coast. Here, you’ll find a light, airy, and romantic white décor on the second floor at 2nd and Walnut Street, with an outdoor patio and panoramic views of Society Hill and Old City throughout the restaurant. Either opt for a table or for one of the more cozy couches or benches with pillows (I’m all about the pillows)! The menu offers fresh fish, seafood, chicken, and a variety of Italian specialties. Small plates meant for sharing are the specialty here. The wine bar and signature drinks are not to be missed and are complemented well by one of several delicious cheese plates. Positano Coast is open seven days a week for lunch, dinner, and drinks, with valet parking available. This wine bar and restaurant is just an all-around great choice. Since really getting into wine a couple of years ago, I just love this place! Vintage focuses on wine, as well as the food it complements. Inside the menu, you’ll find a large variety of wines representing a number of locations around the world. Sixty wines by the glass and over twenty bottles are available at Vintage. If you’re not in the mood for wine, you’ll also find an array of international beers for your choosing. Vintage also features regular wine, beer, appetizer, and entrée specials that are constantly changing; just take a look at the chalkboard menu inside. Another ex girlfriend curse is treating your new girl just like you treated your old girlfriend.  Sometimes even going as far as to make it as tho they are the same person.  This is a habit of human nature we think since we were with a girl for so long that they are all the same.  This is false and can ruin a date from the get go.  Trust me just this weekend I fell into the trap of this curse.  I was out with this girl and some friends and for no reason what so ever I was being rude to her.  Why was this?  Simple because I was treating her how i treated my ex!

We as men must get past this ex girl friend stigma if we are ever going to have another relationship.  We can not whine to every girl we talk to about how bad we were treated nor can we compare every girl to the old girl.  I know it is hard to break this cycle but the sooner we do the sooner we can have serenity in our lives.  Thanks for listening Philly and hopefully you will take my advice! 

Love is in the air!

For whatever reason causes this phenomenon I am not complaining.  One look around the city on a nice day and you can tell why so much love is around the air.  The girls are all looking good and ready to strut their stuff after a long cold winter of heavy jackets and clothing.  It can almost be compared to an animal who has been hibernating all winter long and now wants to get out and enjoy life.

From past experience I do recommend starting a fresh relationship in the Spring.  It can only turn out to be positive plus you have the whole summer ahead of you to get to know each other.  There is no better time to invest in a significant other then in these upcoming months.  So for all you single men and women this is your time to shine!
