Trying to figure out a skin care regimen can often be a daunting task for many women. With big promises and steep price tags, it’s no wonder why it is so easy to spend a lot of money and receive little results. One of the easiest ways to determine the quality of a product is to understand the ingredients within. Let’s focus on the first step of your skin care regimen, cleansing.

One of the cheapest fillers companies can load up on as an ingredient is detergent, and it is a great foaming agent. You know those bubbly suds you are so fond of, you think make you feel so squeaky clean, think again. The same detergent you are washing your face with, (and your hair), is also found in such gentle products such as: engine cleaners, laundry detergent, concrete floor cleaners and car washes. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or aka, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, is an irritating detergent that is found in anything that foams. If a product suds, SLS is an ingredient.

　 Most of us equate foam and lather with more cleansing power, but really its stripping the natural lipids from your skin. As we know, skin thrives on hydration, but is the last organ of your body to receive it. The number one reason why our skin age is from dehydration and SLS is a severely drying ingredient.

Additionally, SLS strips away your natural oils while leaving a sticky film behind. The sticky film attracts dirt, environmental debris and bacteria which are what causes those stubborn black heads, clogged pores, and acne. Additionally, when you strip away your natural oil, your body’s response by producing more oil where it is being taken from. In turn, this only leads to the cycle of oily skin.

Looking for some hip designer clothes of yesteryear?  Maybe a brand new(ish) kitchen table? Well, you’re in luck!  There are plenty of thrift and vintage shops hidden all around Philadelphia and I’m about to help you sort through some of the best.  From South Philly to Olde City, thrift stores are stationed to give you cool clothes and quirky décor items to deck out your apartment or wardrobe for fractions of the price. 

Wilbur

Wilber, located in the heart of Queen Village, offers up vintage threads hand selected by owner, Daniel Wilber.  Though prices are a bit lofty, those seeking true vintage treasures will have no problem loosening their purse strings here.  With a huge selection of jewelry and both men’s and women’s clothing, shoes and accessories, Wilbur is definitely worth a browse, if not an all out fashion binge. 

Philly AIDS Thrift

710 South 5^th St

I’m not picking favorites, but if I had to, this would be it.  PAT’s new location is enormous, appropriate for the stores attitude and sense of humor.  The place is riddled with comical signage and all clothes are tagged with a witty or self-deprecating word or two.  You can find anything here.  Racks and racks of clothes, mountains of home-wares and walls filled from floor to ceiling with DVD’s, CD’s and even VHS tapes for you stubborn at home movie watchers.   There are sales everyday and even a free bin located out front of the store.  The icing on the cake at Philly AIDS Thrift is that it donates all profits to the AIDS Fund, helping those with HIV and Aids in the Philadelphia region.  Get stuff, help people. 

Uhuru Furniture

1220 Spruce St

This place is the hands down winner for best furniture finds.  Plenty of vintage and not-so-old furniture is up for grabs at reasonable prices.  You can spot the store from blocks away with their sidewalk piled high with furniture, perfect for walk by shopping and instantaneous apartment updating.  Also, if you have some furniture to get rid of, Uhuru will take it off your hands with their free pick up service. 

Circle Thrift

1125 South Broad St

If you are looking for the usual thrift store items on the extra cheap, this is your place.  Six-dollar coats, 2-dollar t-shirts, and even some heavily discounted furniture are on the menu at Circle Thrift.  I will say, however, that the clothes are a bit lackluster compared to those at Wilbur or even AIDS Thrift but you can definitely find a few treasures if you look hard enough.  Be sure to check for color-coded sales throughout the week for an even lower bottom line.

As you are aware, The Philadelphia Fashion Incubator at Macy’s Center City is a new initiative devoted to fashion design in Philadelphia. Here, four aspiring designers from the Philadelphia eight-county region will have the opportunity to participate in a year-long residency program where they will have access to office space, a production room and shared showroom space/conference room (housed in Macy’s Center City), mentoring from industry and business professionals, and a significant schedule of monthly workshops focused on the business of fashion. Designers will also participate in various fashion events throughout the year including pop-up shops, trunk shows and fashion shows.

The goal is to foster emerging design talent in Philadelphia and provide them with the tools to become a successful entrepreneur and open a thriving business in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Style Magazine Holiday cover party was certainly a swanky event last night. Melania Trump made an appearance as the host for the party. She graces the December 2012 cover debuting her sixth line of her “Melania® Timepieces & Fashion Jewelry” collection. I am sure she has done the Donald Proud and quite frankly, she is even more stunning in person.

Guest enjoyed this chic event at the Ritz Carlton, tasty Holiday cocktails provided by Pernod Ricard, as well as hors d’oeuvres by 10 Arts Bistro & Lounge. Some of the other red carpet guest included Mayor Michael Nutter and NBC10’s John Clark.

Philadelphia is encouraging to keep budding fashion designers right here in the city of brotherly love. The brand new fashion initiative is known as The Philadelphia Fashion Incubator located within Macy’s in Center City.

The program provides aspiring designers the vital tools and business resources to grow their own fashion company. An ecosystem to nurture young talent that could help evolve Philadelphia as a high fashion city.  During the press conference this Tuesday morning, Mayor Michael Nutter showed his support and passion for the program.

“We want to encourage that kind of success…encourage the young entrepreneurs to continue their work, to grow and thrive. Philly is fashion.” Said Mayor Nutter

The mayor continued to invite every business to support with funding and donations. Some of the current supporters include Macys, City of Philadelphia, TD Bank and MOORE College of Art and Design.

NBC Philadelphia “The Scene” has launched the “That Girl, That Guy” style campaign. It is my honor to be one of the two contributors to this weekly spot showcasing the stylish men and women in the NBC 10 Philadelphia viewing area. Myself along with Catriona Whitehead have been tasked with seeking out some of the ever so stylish individuals from Philly and its surround Tri-State area to breakdown their style for everyone to learn from. The girl and guy that we select we have a profile featured on the NBC Philadelphia “The Scene’s” website and style gallery. Primarily, I will be responsible for reviewing all of the male entries and Catriona will be reviewing all of that female entries. We are very excited to be working with NBC 10 Philadelphia to help shed light on the stylish people of the Tri-State area.
